A broken heart and a contrite spirit

A broken heart is a heart that is completely open to God’s counsel and commandments and receives God’s counsel and commandments with gladness. A contrite spirit is one that knows its place with respect to God, and confesses that God is God, and is our Father, and submits to his will as a child submits to his Father.

A broken heat and a contrite spirit never rejects the scriptures, but thirsts after them. It does not choose the philosophies of men or assume its know better based on science or traditions over truth which comes from God. A broken heart is obedient, a contrite spirit is obedient. Christ’s heart was broken and his spirit was contrite, more than any other man, and thus he obeyed every word of the Father and the vanity of men had no power over him.

If we have a broken heart and a contrite spirit we receive the word with gladness and it grows brighter and brighter in us until the perfect day, and we love to obey our God and to hear his scripture, to bask in his counsel, and to learn his truth.
