Blessing and cursing

When our notions are far from the language of the scriptures then you can be certain we are wrong. We are happy to speak of God’s blessing people. But we never speak of his cursing them.

We don’t believe God would curse anybody.

However, doing a quick text count the bible uses the word ‘curse’ a bit more than 40% of the time it uses the word ‘bless’. The Book of Mormon uses the word ‘curse’ a little less than 40% of the time it uses the word ‘bless’.

A few examples of the word “curse” in the Book of Mormon are:

2 Nephi 28:31 Cursed is he that putteth his trust in man, or maketh flesh his arm, or shall hearken unto the precepts of men, save their precepts shall be given by the power of the Holy Ghost.

Jacob 2:33 For they shall not lead away captive the daughters of my people because of their tenderness, save I shall visit them with a sore curse, even unto destruction; for they shall not commit whoredoms, like unto them of old, saith the Lord of Hosts.

Alma 30:55 But Alma said unto him: If this curse should be taken from thee thou wouldst again lead away the hearts of this people; therefore, it shall be unto thee even as the Lord will.

You could go a year without anyone  in church saying that the Lord curses the wicked, or that the Lord will curse the disobedient. We do not like, or particularly believe, statements about the Lord cursing anyone. But we should believe in the scriptures. Truth always has more power that our alterations of it. He is a God that blesses the righteous and curses the wicked. Because he has said as much about himself, and he is a God that cannot lie.
