We have heard Joseph Smith’s prophesies about the Elders of the church rising up and saving the constitution.
But if this is true, and if the constitution is to be saved in the long run, it will not be saved in the United States. It will be saved as the government of Zion.
In the revelations we read that Christ will “make a full end of all nations”. Thus the United States of America will come to a full end. It will conclude. It will no longer exist. That is what it means to make a “full end of all nations”.
But will the constitution be saved by the Elders of the church? Indeed it will. For they will take it up as the government of Zion when they lay the foundation of that great city in earnest.
This land, the land of the United States, must, of necessity, undergo what Joseph Smith prophesied.
“And now I am prepared to say by the authority of Jesus Christ, that not many years shall pass away before the United States shall present such a scene of bloodshed as has not a parallel in the history of our nation; pestilence, hail, famine, and earthquake will sweep the wicked of this generation from off the face of the land, to open and prepare the way for the return of the lost tribes of Israel from the north country.”
Note that this does not refer to the civil war, for that did not fulfilled the prophesied purpose. The purpose of these destructions is to “sweep the wicked of this generation from off the face of the land, to open and prepare the way for the return of the lost tribes of Israel from the north country”. The “north country” refers to the fact that ancient Israel was scattered and take captive by lands north of it.
And of necessity, the prophesy will be fulfilled:
Revelation 11:15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign forever and ever.
This verse is about Christ claiming his rightful place as king over the earth. And by claiming the earth as his kingdom and his place as its rightful king, in conjunction with that action, he makes a full end of all nations.
D&C 87:6 And thus, with the sword and by bloodshed the inhabitants of the earth shall mourn; and with famine, and plague, and earthquake, and the thunder of heaven, and the fierce and vivid lightning also, shall the inhabitants of the earth be made to feel the wrath, and indignation, and chastening hand of an Almighty God, until the consumption decreed hath made a full end of all nations;
Will anything survive this?
Of course, the city of Zion can survive this. Or Zion may be established in its fulness after this. Either way, it comes out the same. For Christ is the king of Zion. He claims the world as his in Revelation 11:15, and will not destroy that which is his own. He says of Zion “behold, mine abode forever” because when Zion is built in truth, Christ comes and dwells there. That is why the 144,000 stand with the Lamb on mount Zion.
Revelation 14:1 And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him a hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads.
Zion must be built by the elders of Israel. And what will they use to govern when God has made a full end of the United States? What will Israel use to govern when the destructions prophesied have destroyed the wicked out of our land so much so as to open the way for scattered Israel to return from the four quarters of the earth and inherit her promised land? Why, the constitution. They will take it up the constitution and save it and it will be the proper rule here.
The usual quotation from Joseph Smith about saving the constitution was recorded in Utah in 1871. Read that year a second time if you missed it. Parley P Pratt gave this account in 1841: “The government is fallen and needs redeeming. It is guilty of Blood and cannot stand as it now is but will come so near desolation as to hang as it were by a single hair!!!!! Then the servants goes [sic] to the nations of the earth, and gathers the strength of the Lord’s house! A mighty army!!!!!! And this is the redemption of Zion when the saints shall have redeemed that government and reinstated it in all its purity and glory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” (George A. Smith Papers, Church Archives, Box 7, Folder 5, January 21, 1841.)
