The children of Zion, even all

There are those who worry about having a voice in the church. That is ridiculous. The prophet and the twelve are leading the church precisely as the Lord wants it led at this time.

That being said, as is perfectly right, we should understand the scripture that says that the minds of the church members are darkened. I will recall it:

D&C 84:54 And your minds in times past have been darkened because of unbelief, and because you have treated lightly the things you have received—

55 Which vanity and unbelief have brought the whole church under condemnation.

56 And this condemnation resteth upon the children of Zion, even all.

We read that, but do not understand it. Which is ironic. When it says that our minds are darkened it means that we make mistakes in our teachings and we do not rightly understand everything we ought to in the gospel. Now note whom this applies to. It doesn’t just apply to the least among us. It says “And this condemnation resteth upon the children of Zion, even all”. That was true in Joseph Smith’s day, and it is true today. It is true of the children of Zion, even all. That means that not everything we hear from the church leaders will be perfectly right, for like us, their minds are also darkened. There are things they misunderstand and mistakes in what they teach.

That’s life. Until we repent.

The apostles and prophet are more than good enough to lead the church precisely the way the Lord wants it led. That doesn’t mean they don’t make mistakes. The scripture actually applies even to the prophet to some degree, just as the Lord himself applied it even to Joseph Smith.

It is an interesting doctrine. It is actually good doctrine (not surprisingly, since it is found in the scriptures) as it means we are required to learn to listen to the Holy Ghost for ourselves.

This should be no shock. Harold B Lee taught a form of this quite frankly. Brigham Young not only thought leaders could err in their teaching, but boldly opposed a prophesy made by a member of the twelve while he was the prophet in Utah.

And that is all well and good enough. The simple truth is that there is no an alternative to living so we have the Holy Ghost. We wanted some alternative, some bureaucratic rule we could use to simplify things and get around learning to hear the Holy Ghost and to live by it. But there is not, we must simply learn to live by the Holy Ghost.

And if we do, it will be perfectly clear to us by the Holy Ghost that the prophet and the twelve are leading the church precisely the way the Lord wants his church to be led.
