Joseph Smith teachings I want to be able to easily get back to:

The earthly is the image of the Heavenly shows that is by the multiplication of lives that the eternal worlds are created and occupied that which is born of the flesh is flesh that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit (excerpt from Franklin D Richards account of Joseph Smith’s 16 July 1843 discourse)

Discourse 16 July 1843, Franklin D. Richards account

also The Order & Ordinances of the Kingdom werre instituted by the Priesthood in the council of Heaven before the World was The words Prison, Paradise & Hell are different translation of the Greek Hades which answers to the Hebrew Shaole the true translation of which is “The world of spirits where the righteous & the wicked dwell together
Joseph said July 16th
All Blessings that were ordained for man by the Council of Heaven were on conditions of obedience to the Law thereof. No man can obtain an eternal Blessing unless the contract or covenant be made in view of Eternity All contracts in view of this Life only terminate with this Life. Case of the woman & 7 husbands Luke 20-29 &c. Those who keep no eternal Law in this life or make no eternal contract are single & alone in the eteranl world (Luke 20-35) and are only made Agels to minister to those who shall be heirs of Salvation never becoming Sons of God having never kept the Law of God ie eternal Law The earthly is the image of the Heavenly shows that is by the multiplication of lives that the eternal worlds are created and occupied that which is born of the flesh is flesh that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit
From the above I deduce that we may ma an eternal covenant with our wives and in the resurrection claim that which is our own and enjoy blessing & glories peculiar to those in that condition even the multiplication of spirits in the eternal world

Saturday 15th A.M. conversing with Dr Wakefield & others in the Bar room— telling a dream concerning his father killing a man who attempted to stab him He also spake concerning key words. The (illegible g word) key word was the first word adam spoke and is a word of supplication. He found the word by the Urim & Thummim – It is that key word to which the heavens is opend

The Prophet on Priesthood. The Priesthood was first given to Adam; he obtained the First Presidency, and held the keys of it from generation to generation. He obtained it in the Creation, before the world was formed, as in Gen. i: 26, 27, 28. He had dominion given him over every living creature. He is Michael the Archangel, spoken of in the Scriptures. Then to Noah, who is Gabriel; he stands next in authority to Adam in the Priesthood; he was called of God to this office, and was the father of all living in his day, and to him was given the dominion. These men held keys first on earth, and then in heaven.

The Priesthood is an everlasting principle, and existed with God from eternity, and will to eternity, without beginning of days or end of years. The keys have to be brought from heaven whenever the Gospel is sent. When they are revealed from heaven, it is by Adam’s authority.

Daniel in his seventh chapter speaks of the Ancient of Days; he means the oldest man, our Father Adam Michael he will call his children together and hold a council with them to prepare them for the coming of the Son of Man. He (Adam) is the father of the human family, and presides over the spirits of all men, and all that have had the keys must stand before him in this grand council. This may take place before some of us leave this stage of action. The Son of Man stands before him, and there is given him glory and dominion. Adam delivers up his stewardship to Christ, that which was delivered to him as holding the keys of the universe, but retains his standing as head of the human family.

The spirit of man is not a created being; it existed from eternity, and will exist to eternity. Anything created cannot be eternal; and earth, water, etc., had their existence in an elementary state, from eternity.
Our Savior speaks of children and says, Their angels always stand before my Father. The Father called all spirits before Him at the creation of man, and organized them. He (Adam) is the head, and was told to multiply. The keys were first given to him, and by him to others. He will have to give an account of his stewardship, and they to him.

The Priesthood is everlasting. The Savior, Moses, and Elias, gave the keys to Peter, James, and John, on the mount when they were transfigured before him. The Priesthood is everlasting— without beginning of days or end of years; without father, mother, etc. If there is no change of ordinances, there is no change of Priesthood. Wherever the ordinances of the Gospel are administered, there is the Priesthood.

How have we come at the Priesthood in the last days? It came down, down, in regular succession. Peter, James, and John had it given to them and they gave it to others. Christ is the Great High Priest; Adam next. Paul speaks of the Church coming to an innumerable company of angels— to God the Judge of all— the spirits of just men made perfect; to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant.- Heb. xii: 23.

I saw Adam in the valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman. He called together his children and blessed them with a patriarchal blessing. The Lord appeared in their midst, and he (Adam) blessed them all, and foretold what should befall them to the latest generation.

This is why Adam blessed his posterity; he wanted to bring them into the presence of God. They looked for a city, etc., [“whose builder and maker is God.” —Heb. xi: 10]. Moses sought to bring the children of Israel into the presence of God, through the power of tho Priesthood, but he could not. In the first ages of the world they tried to establish the same thing; and there were Eliases raised up who tried to restore these very glories, but did not obtain them; but they prophesied of a day when this glory would be revealed. Paul spoke of the dispensation of the fullness of times, when God would gather together all things in one, etc.; and those men to whom these keys have been given, will have to be there; and they without us cannot be made perfect.

These men are in heaven, but their children are on the earth. Their bowels yearn over us. God sends down men for this reason. “And the Son of Man shall send forth His angels, and they shall gather out of His kingdom all things that give offense and them that do iniquity. “-(Matt, xiii: 41). All these authoritative characters will come down and join hand in hand in bringing about this work.

The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed. The mustard seed is small, but bring forth a large tree, and the fowls lodge in the branches. The fowls are the angels. Thus angels come down, combine together to gather their children, and gather them. We cannot be made perfect without them, nor they without us; when these things are done, the Son of Man will descend, the Ancient of Days sit; we may come to an innumerable company of angels, have communion with and receive instructions from them. Paul told about Moses’ proceedings; spoke of the children of Israel being baptized.— (I Cor. x: 1-4). He knew this, and that all the ordinances and blessings were in the Church. Paul had these things, and we may have the fowls of heaven lodge in the branches, etc.

The “Horn” made war with the Saints and overcame them, until the Ancient of Days came; judgment was given to the Saints of the Most High from the Ancient of Days; the time came that the Saints possessed the Kingdom. This not only makes us ministers here, but in eternity.

Salvation cannot come without revelation; it is in vain for anyone to minister without it. No man is a minister of Jesus Christ without being a Prophet. No man can be a minister of Jesus Christ except he has the testimony of Jesus; and this is the spirit of prophecy. Whenever salvation has been administered, it has been by testimony. Men of the present time testify of heaven and hell, and have never seen either; and I will say that no man knows these things without this.

Men profess to prophesy. I will prophesy that the signs of the coming of the Son of Man are already commenced. One pestilence will desolate after another. We shall soon have war and bloodshed. The moon will be turned into blood. I testify of these things, and that the coming of the Son of Man is nigh, even at your doors. If our souls and our bodies are not looking forth for the coming of the Son of Man; and after we are dead, if we are not looking forth, we shall be among those who are calling for the rocks to fall upon them.

The hearts of the children of men will have to be turned to the fathers, and the fathers to the children living or dead to prepare them for the coming of the Son of Man. If Elijah did not come, the whole earth would be smitten.

There will be here and there a Stake [of Zion] for the gathering of the Saints. Some may have cried peace, but the Saints and the world will have little peace from henceforth. Let this not hinder us from going to the Stakes; for God has told us to flee, not dallying, or we shall be scattered, one here, and another there. There your children shall be blessed, and you in the midst of friends where you may be blessed. The Gospel net gathers of every kind.

I prophesy, that that man who tarries after he has an opportunity of going, will be afflicted by the devil. Wars are at hand; we must not delay; but are not required to sacrifice. We ought to have the building up of Zion as our greatest object. When wars come, we shall have to flee to Zion. The cry is to make haste. The last revelation says, Ye shall not have time to have gone over the earth, until these things come. It will come as did the cholera, war, fires, and earthquakes; one pestilence after another, until the Ancient of Days comes, then judgment will be given to the Saints.

Whatever you may hear about me or Kirtland, take no notice of it, for if it be a place of refuge, the devil will use his greatest efforts to trap the Saints. You must make yourselves acquainted with those men who like Daniel pray three times a day toward the House of the Lord. Look to the Presidency and receive instruction. Every man who is afraid, covetous, will be taken in a snare. The time is soon coming, when no man will have any peace but in Zion and her stakes.

I saw men hunting the lives of their own sons, and brother murdering brother, women killing their own daughters, and daughters seeking the lives of their mothers. I saw armies arrayed against armies. I saw blood, desolation, fires. The Son of Man has said that the mother shall be against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother. These things are at our doors. They will follow the Saints of God from city to city. Satan will rage, and the spirit of the devil is now enraged. I know not how soon these things will take place; but with a view of them, shall I cry peace? No! I will lift up my voice and testify of them. How long you will have good crops, and the famine be kept off, I do not know; when the fig tree leaves, know then that the summer is nigh at hand.

We may look for angels and receive their ministrations, but we are to
try the spirits and prove them, for it is often the case that men make a
mistake in regard to these things. God has so ordained that when He has communicated, no vision is to be taken but what you see by the seeing of the eye, or what you hear by the hearing of the ear. When you see a vision, pray for the interpretation; if you get not this, shut it up; there must be certainty in this matter. An open vision will manifest that which is more important. Lying spirits are going forth in the earth. There will be great manifestations of spirits, both false and true.

Being born again, comes by the spirit of God through ordinances. An angel of God never has wings. Some will say that they have seen a spirit; that he offered them his hand, but they did not touch it. This is a lie. First, it is contrary to the plan of God: a spirit cannot come but in glory; an angel has flesh and bones; we see not their glory. The devil may appear as an angel of light. Ask God to reveal it; if it be of the devil, he will flee from you: if of God, He will manifest Himself, or make it manifest. We may come to Jesus and ask Him; He will know all about it;if He comes to a little child, He will adapt himself to the language and capacity of a little child.
Every spirit, or vision, or singing, is not of God. The devil is an orator; he is powerful; he took our Savior on to a pinnacle of the Temple, and kept Him in the wilderness for forty days. The gift of discerning spirits will be given to the Presiding Elder. Pray for him that he may have this gift. Speak not in the gift of tongues without understanding it, or without interpretation. The devil can speak in tongues; the adversary will come with his work; he can tempt all classes; can speak in English or Dutch. Let no one speak in tongues unless he interpret, except by the consent of the one who is placed to preside; then he may discern or interpret, or another may. Let us seek for the glory of Abraham, Noah, Adam, the Apostles, who have communion with [knowledge of] these things, and then we shall be among that number when Christ comes.

Discourse, 21 May 1843, as Reported by Martha Jane Knowlton Coray

A Sermon by the Prophet Joseph Smith. On Election
Every man goes to his own place 2 Peter 1. Ch.— Judas by transgression fell that he might go to his own place. there is one glory of the Sun another of the moon & another of the stars as one Star differetheth &c, so also is the reserection of the dead, brethren I am not a very pious man. I do not wish to be a great deal better than any body else. If a Prophet was so much better than any body else was he would inherit a glory far beyond what any one else would inherit [p. [36]] and behold he would be alone, for who would be his company in heaven. for If I should Condesend to be so righteouse as the brethren would wish me to be. lo I should be taken from your midst and be translated as was Elijah. Righteousness is not that which men esteem holiness. That which the world call righteousness I have not any regard for. To be righteous is to be just and merciful. if a man fails in kindness justice and mercy he will be damed for [p. [37]] many will say in that day Lord. have we not Prophesied in thy name and in thy name done many wonderful works but he will say unto them ye workers of iniquity &c we were Eye witnesses of his Majesty we have also a more sure word of Prophecy. now brethren who can explain this no man be he that has obtained these things in the same way that Peter did. Yet it is so plain & so simple & easy to be understood that when I have shown you the interpretation thereof you will think you have always known it yourselves— These are [p. [38]]but hints at those things that were revealed to Peter, and verily brethren there are things in the bosom of the Father, that have been hid from the foundation of the world. that are not known neither can be except by direct Revelation The Apostle says, unto them who have obtained like precious faith with us <the apostles> through the righteousness of God & our Savior Jesus Christ. through knowledge of him that has called us to glory & virtue add to faith virtue &c &c to godliness brotherli Kindness— Charity— ye <shall> neither be barren or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. [p. [39]]
he that lacketh these things is blind— wherefore the rather brethren <after all this> give diligence to make your Calling & Election sure
Knowledge is necessary to life and Godliness. wo unto you Priest & divines, who preach that knowledge is not necessary unto life & Salvation. take away Apostles &c take away knowledge and you will find yourselves worthy of the damnation of hell. Knowledge is revelation hear <all> ye brethren, this grand Key Knowledge is the power of God unto Salvation.
What is Salvation. Salvation is for a man to be Saved from all his enemies even our last enemy which is death [p. [40]] and for David Saith, “and the Lord Said unto my Lord ‘Sit thou on my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool”
The design of God before the <foundation of the> world, was that we should take tabernacles that through faithfulness we should over come & <thereby> obtain a reserection from the dead, in this wise obtain glory honor, power and dominion for this thing is needful inasmuch as the Spirits in the Eternal world, glory in bringing other Spirits in Subjection unto them, Striving continually for the mastery, He who rules in the heavens when he has a [p. [41]]certain work to do calls the Spirits before him to organize them. they present themselves and offer their services——
When Lucifer was hurled from Heaven the decree was that he Should not obtain a tabernacle not those that were him, but go abroad upon the earth exposed to the anger of the elements naked & bare, but ofttimes he lays hold upon men binds up their Spirits enters their habitations laughfs at the decree of God, and rejoices in that he hath a house to dwell in, by & by he is expelled by Authority & goes abroad mourning [p. [42]] naked upon the earth like a man without a house exposed to the tempest & the storm—
There are are Some things in my own bosom that must remain there. If Paul could say I knew a man who ascended to the third heaven & saw things unlawful for man to utter, I more. There are only certain things that can be done by the Spirits and that which is done by us that is not done with a view to eternity is not binding in eternity. Oh Peter if they who were of like precious faith with thee were injoined to make [p. [43]] their Calling & Election sure, how much more all we, There are two Keys, one Key knowledge, the other, make your Calling & election sure, for if you do these things you shall never fall for so an entrance shall be adminestere unto you abundently unto the everlasting Kingdom of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ, we made known unto you the power & coming of our Lord & S. J. Christ were Eye witnesses of his majesty he received from God the Father honor & Glory when there came such a voice [p. [44]] to him from the iccellent glory this is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. this voice which came from heaven we heard when we were with him in the holy Mount. we have also a more sure word of Prophecy whereunto give heed until the day Star arise in your hearts this is It is one thing to receive knowledge by the voice of God, (this is my beloved Son &c), & another to Know that you yourself will be Saved. to have a positive promise of your own Salvation [p. [45]] is making your calling & election Sure, Viz the voice of Jesus Saying my beloved thou shalt have eternal life. Brethren never cease strugling until you get this evidence, &
Take heed both before and after obtaining the more sure word of Prop[h]ecy [p. [46]]\

Discourse, 29 September 1839, as Reported by James Mulholland
Spoke and explained concerning uselessness of preaching [p. 12] to the world about great judgements but rather to preach the simple gospel— Explained concerning the coming of the son of Man &c that all will be raised to meet him but the righteous will remain with him in the cloud whilst all the proud and all that do wickedly will have to return to the earth, and suffer his vengeance which he will take upon them this is the second death &c &c
Also that it is a false idea that the saints will escape all the judgements whilst the wicked suffer— for all flesh is subject to suffer— and “the righteous shall hardly escape” still many of the saints will escape— for the just shall live by faith— yet many of the righteous shall fall a prey to disease to pestilence &c and yet &c by reason of the weakness of the flesh and yet be saved in the kingdom of God So that it is an unhallowed principle to say that such and such have transgressed because they have been preyed upon by disease or death for all flesh is subject to death and the Saviour has said, “Judge not “lest ye be judged”. George Laub account of a Joseph Smith discourse

Joseph Smith. Nauvoo, April 13th, 1843. Concerning Gods Witness.
Mathew 14
24th Chapter of Revelation of John 6 & 7 verses, & the orriginal translation Reads thus: And I will Send you another witness & he shall preach this gospel to all nations to the ends of the world, But woe to that man or woman who Shall lift up their or his hands against God’s witness, for they are rasing their hands or arms against the power of God and they will be cursed. But in these times in the last days there will many fals prophet arise and false teachers and deceive many. They shall have many followers by their deceit. They strive to have power and by their pernitious ways lead off many-for Brother Joseph Smith was chosen for the last dispensation or Seventh Dispensation. The time the grand council set in heaven to organise this world Joseph was chosen for the last & greatest Prophet, to lay the foundation of God’s work of the Seventh Dispensation. Therefore the Jews asked John the Baptism if he was Elias or Jesus or that great prophet that was to come.

The Devil Lusifer also organised his kingdom in oposition to overthrow God’s kingdom & he became the Son of perdition.

Also concerning the kingdoms: In my Father’s house or kingdom are many kingdoms or worlds. I will goe to prepare a place for you and according to your works you shall be rewarded. These who will not obey the gospel will goe to the world of spirits, there to stay till they have paid the utmost farthing or till some person pays their de[b]ts they owe. Now all those die in the faith goe to the prison of Spirits to preach to the ded in body, but they are alive in the Spirit & those Spirits preach to the Spirits that they may live according to God in the Spirit and men do minister for them in the flesh and angels bare the glad tidings to the Spirits & they are made happy by these means. Therefore those who are baptised for their dead are the Saviours on mount Zion & they must receave their washings and their anointings for their dead, the same as for themselvs, till they are connected to the ones in the dispensation before us and trace their leniage to connect the priesthood again.

And if any other man preach any other gospel then this and the Baptism for the remision of sins and the laying on of hands for the reception of the Holy Ghost let him be anathamised or acursed. The curs of God shall be upon him or them.

Concerning Resurection. Flesh and Blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God or the kingdom that God inherits or inhabits, but the flesh without the blood and the Spirit of God flowing in the vains in sted of the blood, for blood is the part of the body that causes corruption. Therefore we must be changed in the twinkle of an eye or have to lay down these tabernacles and leave the blood vanish away. Therefore Jesus Christ left his blood to atone for the Sins of the world that he might assend into the presents of the father, for god dwels in flaming flames and he is a consuming fire. He will consume all that is unclean and unholly, and we could not abide his presents unless pure Spirits in us. For the Blood is the corruptible part of the tabernacles.

For the resurection is devised to take away corruption and make Man perfect or in the glory which he was created for. The body is Lower[ed] in corruption & raised in incorruption. Then we will be able to goe in the presents of God. Br. Joseph Smith was sent to remind the world of Sin, of rituousness, & of the Judgments to come. But this is that of what John says in his 14th Chapter, but he says of sin, of rituousness, and of a Judgment to come to reprove the world. This is rong Translation, for to remind is correct.

Concerning those who here the gospel. Now concerning those who know the gospel & do not obey, But fight against it, will be shut up in prison condemnation and shall not be visited till many days hence, Isaijah 24 chapter. Then some person has to redeem them by making a forfit of some payment for them, etc. Now the name of Adam in the
Hebrew signifies Red Earth
Cain signifies Posesion.

Able denots sorrow.

Eloheam denots Gods.
Now the history of Joseph[u]s in Speaking of angels came down and took themselves wives of the daughters of men, See Geneses 6 Chapter 1-2, verses. These ware resurrected Bodies, Violated the Celestial laws. Now in the days of Noah there was a man the name of Nimrod, he being the first one that sant [?] after as of himself. After the flood god commanded the people to Spread over the earth but they would not & stayed & stayed upon the high Land for fear of another delluge. But Nimrod rose up and said he could withstand God. He Said Come let us Build a tower hier than the watter can rise and I will goe up and fight this God. This is the account Joseph[u]s tells us. But God confounded their languag and they ware oblidged to scatter abroad over the land.
Now Bab[y]lon Signifies Confu[s]ion. Joseph Signifies another to come.
Moab. Do [ditto] the daughter lay with the fathers or Fathers with
Daughters. Ammon Denots one of the kinfokes. Isaac denots Lafter for
when the Angel told Abraham they should have a Son Sarah Laughed.
Jacob Denots weekness, Isreal the Earth. Again, 5th Chapter of 2nd
Corinthians, 1st Verse, a house not made with corruptable hands for there is not any house or thing made without hands as a building.

Now I will tell the designs of building the tower of Bable. It was designed to goe to the city of Enoch, for the veil was not yet so thick that it hid it from their Sight. So they concluded to goe to the City of Enoch, for God gave him place above this impure Earth. For he could breath a pure hair & him and his City was taken, for God provided a better place for him for they was pure in heart. For it is the pure in heart that causes Zion to be & the time will come again to meet, that Enoch and his city will come again to meet our city & his people, our people, & the Air will be pure & the Lord will be in our midst for Ever.

Most of these are a bit hard to find, this one is just from history of the church, but I can never find it:

And now I am prepared to say by the authority of Jesus Christ, that not many years shall pass away before the United States shall present such a scene of bloodshed as has not a parallel in the history of our nation; pestilence, hail, famine, and earthquake will sweep the wicked of this generation from off the face of the land, to open and prepare the way for the return of the lost tribes of Israel from the north country. The people of the Lord, those who have complied with the requirements of the new covenant, have already commenced gathering together to Zion, which is in the state of Missouri, therefore I declare unto you the warning which the Lord has commanded to declare unto this generation, remembering that the eyes of my Maker are upon me and that to him I am accountable for every word I say wishing nothing worse to my fellow-men than their eternal salvation; therefore, “Fear God, and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment is come.” Repent ye, repent ye, and embrace the everlasting covenant, and flee to Zion, before the overflowing scourge overtake you, for there are those now living upon the earth whose eyes shall not be closed in death until they see all these things, which I have spoken, fulfilled. Remember these things; call upon the Lord while He is near, and seek Him while He may be found, is the exhortation of your unworthy servant. [Signed] JOSEPH SMITH, JUN.

Discourse, December 1840, as Reported by William Clayton

A key by Joseph Smith Decm 1840—W. C. [William Clayton]
If an Angel or spirit appears offer him your hand; if he is a spirit from God he will stand still and not offer you his hand. If from the Devil he will either shrink back from you or offer his hand, which if he does you will feel nothing, but be deceived.
A good Spirit will not deceive.
Angels are beings who have bodies and appear to men in the form of man.1 [p. 3]

Joseph Smith’s last letter to James Arlington Bennett

“You observed, “as I have proven myself to be a philosophical divine” I must excuse you when you say that we must leave these influences to the mass. The meaning of “philosophical divine” may be taken in various ways. If, as the learned world apply the term, you infer that I have achieved a victory, and been strengthened by a scientific religion, as practiced by the popular sects of the age, through the aid of colleges, seminaries, Bible societies, missionary boards, financial organizations and gospel money schemes, then you are wrong. Such a combination of Men and means shows a form of godliness without the power; for is it not written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise.””Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the rudiments of the world, and not after the doctrines of Christ.” But if the inference is that by more love, more light, more virtue, and more truth from the Lord, I have succeeded as a man of God, then you reason truly, though the weight of the sentiment is lost. when the “influence is left to the mass.” “Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?”‘

Discourse, circa 21 March 1841, as Reported by Martha Jane Knowlton Coray

Sermon 2nd
on the death of Judge [Elias] Higbee delivered in the latter part of the winter about just before he took Laws store at the House of Bishop [Vinson] Knight year 1841
Joseph Smith read the 3 chap Malachi dwelt <with emphasis> upon the Levitical priesthood and the promise concerning them
Took up Jhon [John] shewed him to be a Levite and proceeded The voice of one crying in the wilderness prepare ye the way of the Lord and make his paths strait Now it was written that the priests lips should keep know[l]edge, and to them should the people seek for understanding and above al[l] the law binds them [p. [23]] and us to receive the word of the Lord at the hands of the Levites therefore Jhon being Lawful heir to the Levitical Priesthood the people were bound to receive his testimony. Hence the saying the Kingdom of heaven suffereth violence and the violent take it by force after Jhon had been testifying of Jesus for some time Jesus came unto him for baptism Jhon felt that the honor of baptizing his master was too great a thing grater than he could claim and said I have need to be baptized of thee and comest thou to me Jesus repl[i]ed thus it behooveth us to fulfill all righteousness thus signifying to Jhon the claim of the Aronic priesthood [p. [24]] which holds the keys of enterance into the Kingdom. Then the three signs which were given were conclusive The dove which sat upon his shoulder was a sure testimony that he was of God Brethren be not deceived an nor doubtful of this fact a spirit of a good man or an angel from heaven who has not a body will never undertake to shake hands with you for he knows you cannot peceive his touch and never will extend his hand but any spirit or body that is attended by a dove you may know to be a pure spirit thus you may is [in?] some measure detect them the spirits who may come unto you [p. [25]]
Jhon was great in that he baptized Jesus an[d] for this cause Jesus saith “Among them that are born of woman <women> there hath not risen a greater than Jhon the baptist— But again he says the from the coming days of Jhon the Batist [John the Baptist] till the Kingdom of Heaven suffereth violence and the violent taketh it by force
Jesus as I said could not enter except to <by> the administration of Jhon. Although Jhon was not a restorer but a forerunner
It was not the Lawful priests who rejected jesus but the self made priests Those who were preests lawfully received the Saviour in his station which was given him by the Law [p. [26]]
All the Authority that we have is from Jhon The Law is not changed nor the ordinances The keys of ushering into the Kingdom were given to Peter James & Jhon.
Malachi 4th chap And he shall purify the sons of Levi &c yes brethren the Lord will purify the sons of Levi good or bad for it is through them that blessings flow to Israel and as Israel once was baptized in the cloud and in the sea so shall <God> as a refiners fire and a fullers soap Purge purify the sons of Levi and purge them as Gold and as silver & then and not till then shall the offering of Judah & Jerusalem be pleasant into <unto> the Lord as in days of old and as in former years [p. [27]]
And he shall witness against all iniquity as saith Malachi and shall sorely chastize those who are gone astray, but still he saith I am God I change not therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed return thou unto me and I will return unto thee. The Lord will begin by revealing the House of Israel among the gentiles and those who have gone from the ordinances of God shall return unto the keeping of all the law and observing his judgement and statutes to do them Then shall the Law of the Lord go forth from Zion and the word of the Lord to the priests and through them from Jerusalem [p. [28]]
And I prophecy that the day will come when you will say Oh that we had given heed but look now upon our public works the <stone> school house for instance the Simoon [simoom]of the Desert has passed over it the people will not hearken nor hear And bondage Death and destruction are close at our heels The Kingdom will not be broken up but judgements awaits man we shall be scattered and driven gathered again & then dispersed reestablished & driven abroad and so on until the Ancient of days shall sit and the Kingom and power thereof shall be given to the saints and they shall possess the it forever and ever which may God hasten for Christs sake Amen [p.
Discourse, 6 April 1843–B, as Reported by James Burgess

Christ says no man knoweth the day or the hour when the Son of man cometh. This is a sweeping argument for sectarianism against Latterdayism Did Christ speak this as a general principle throughout all generations Oh no he spake in the present tense no man that was then liveing upon the footstool of God knew the day or the hour But he did not say that there was no man throughout all generations that should not know the day or the hour No for this would be in flat contradection with other scripture for the prophet says that God will do nothing but what he will reveal unto his Servants the prophets consequently if it is not made known to the Prophets it will not come to pass; again we find Paul 1rst of Thesslonians 5th chapter expressly points out the characters who shall [p. [2]] not know the day nor the hour the when the Son of Man cometh for says he it will come upon them as the theif or unawares. Who are they they are the children of darkness or night. But to the Saints he says yea are not of the night nor of darkness that that day should come upon you unawares. John the revelator says 14 chap 7th verse that the hour of his judgements is come they are precursers or forerunners of the comeing of Christ. Read Mathew 24 Chap and all the Prophets. He says then shall they see the sign of the comeing of the Son of Man in the clouds of Heaven. How are we to see it ans[wer], As the lighting up of the morning or the dawning of the morning cometh from the east and Shineth unto the west— So also is the comeing of the Son of Man. The dawning of the morning makes its appearance in the east and moves along gradualy s[o] also will the comeing of the Son of Man be. [p. [3]] it will be small at its first appearance and gradually becomes large untill every eye shall see it. Shall the Saints understand it Oh yes, Paul says so. Shall the wicked understand Oh no they attribute it to a natural cause. They will probably suppose it is too great Comets comeing in contact with each other It will be small at first and will grow larger and larger untill it will be all in a blaze so that every eye shall see it. 1840 — W[illiam].C[layton].

If an Angel or spirit appears offer him your hand; if he is a spirit from God he will stand still and not offer you his hand. If from the Devil he will either shrink back from you or offer his hand, which if he does you will feel nothing, but be deceived.

A good Spirit will not deceive. 2

Angels are beings who have bodies and appear to men in the form of man.

Account of Meeting, [19 January 1841], as Reported by William P. McIntire

Next Meeting— Joseph said that before foundation of the Earth in the Grand-Counsel that the spirits of all men ware subject to opression & the express purpose of God in Giveing it a tabernicle was to arm it against the power of Darkness— for instance Jesus said get behind me Satan also the apostle said Resist the Devil & he will flee from you [p. Next Meeting Meeting on sunday Joseph Reads the 38th. Discourse, between circa 26 June and circa 4 August 1839–B, as Reported by William Clayton

Behold a sower went forth to sow &c.
Our Savior is the sower— the people are the world— the harvest is the end of the world— the reapers are the angels. The end of the world is not come consequently the harvest cannot come without angels. The Son of man is to send forth his angels. The Son of man says that the Saints shall judge the world and angels. God has revealed himself. When they come up before God they will be asked, did this angel perform this or that, that he was sent to do, if not they will be judged— the world judged.
Some fell among thorns, &c. God sows— the enemy comes and sows parties, division, heresies,— shall we kill them— No, not till harvest, the end of the world. [p. 26] The Son of God will do as he ever has done from the beginning— send forth his angels. If the reapers do not come the wheat cannot be saved. Nothing but kingdom being restored can save the world. Like unto a treasure hid in a field— this figure is a representation of the kingdom in the last days. Michael, Adam, Noah— I am Gabriel,— well says I who are you, I am Peter the angel flying through the midst of heaven. Moroni delivered the Book of Mormon.
The Pearl of great price is the inheritance prepared for the Saints — sell all you have get purchase &c. What is the end of the world— the destruction of the wicked, the angels have begun to be revealed, they shall bind up the testimony. Like unto a Merchant man buying goodly pearls; a net that gathers [p. 27] of every kind; the wheat gathered into the barn; the tares left on the field to be burned. The net gathers in of every kind. Those who hold keys were more concerned about their children than themselves it happens to be our lot to live in a day when this [takes] place. [p. 28]

It is the privilige of the children of God to come to God & get Revelation. XIV John Let not your heart be troubled &c, There are a great many Mansions in my Father’s house. I am going to prepare one for you [p. 75] rather Better than common. It is the privilege of the sons of God to inherit the same Mansion &c. When any person receives a vision of Heaven, he Sees things that he never thought of before. if we should tell of different glories as Paul did. in my fathers house are many Mansions. every man that receives the Gospel receives that inheritance that the Apostles did. Every one that hath seen me hath Seen the Father. He that believeth, any person that believs the works that I do shall he do also & greater works. The Father could not be glorified in the Son on any other principle than we coming to God. asking. receiving. heavens open visions &c.— they are done away because of unbelief— I will pray the Father & he shall send you another Comforter. There is one Comforter & another Comforter to abide with you forever, reach to things within the vail. know that you are Sealed. If you get it, it will stand [p. 76] by you forever. How is it to be obtained? Keep my commandme[n]ts & I will pray &c.— It is a privilege to view the son of man himself, he dwelleth with you & Shall be in you. his Spirit shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless, I will come to you, abide with you forevever, Seal you up to Eternal life. yet a little while & ye shall see me no more, but ye see me.— He that hath my commandments & keepeth them. he it is that loveth me &c— I will manifest myself to him. If he does not he has not told the truth. I will put promises in your heart. that will not leave you but that will not Seal you up. we may come to the general assembly & church of the first born, Spirits of Just men made perfect, unto Christ. The innumerable company of Angels are those that have been ressurrected from the dead. the Spirits of Just men made perfect are those without bodies. It is our privilege to pray for & obtain these things. [p. 77]
How wilt thou manifest thyself to us & not to the world? evidently knowing that it would be so that he would manifest himself.
There was no cholera, no mobs before this came. I told them that rejoiced in Mobs that they Should have them, they have since come in torrents. they did not receive the testimony of the Servants of God. If a man love me he will keep my words. & my father will love him. & we both me & my father will take our abode with him. There are certain characters that walked with God. saw him, conversed about heaven &c But the comforter that I will send. (not the other Comforter) shall teach you all things.— Who?— He that loveth me &c— This shall bring all things to remembrance whatsoever things I have said unto you. he shall teach you until ye come to me & my father. God is not a respecter of persons. we all [p. 78] have the Same privilige. Come to God weary him until he blesses you &c— we are entitled to the Same blessings. Jesus, Revelations, Just men, &c— Angels &c. &c. not Laying again the doctrine of Christ go on to perfection. Obtain that holy Spirit of promise— Then you can be sealed to Eternal Life.— [2/3 page blank] [p.

“Will you all stand by me to the death, and sustain at the peril of your lives, the laws of our country, and the liberties and privileges which our fathers have transmitted unto us, sealed with their sacred blood? (“Aye!” shouted thousands.) He then said, “It is well. if you had not done it, I would have gone out there (pointing to the west)” and would have raised up a mightier people.”

Discourse July 16th 1843 reported by franklin g richards

Joseph said July 16th
All Blessings that were ordained for man by the Council of Heaven were on conditions of obedience to the Law thereof. No man can obtain an eternal Blessing unless the contract or covenant be made in view of Eternity All contracts in view of this Life only terminate with this Life. Case of the woman & 7 husbands Luke 20-29 &c.
Those who keep no eternal Law in this life or make no eternal contract are single & alone in the eteranl world (Luke 20-35) and are only made Angels to minister to those who shall be heirs of Salvation never becoming Sons of God having never kept the Law of God ie eternal Law The earthly is the image of the Heavenly shows that is by the multiplication of lives that the eternal worlds are created and occupied that which is born of the flesh is flesh that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit
From the above I deduce that we may ma an eternal covenant with our wives and in the resurrection claim that which is our own and enjoy blessing & glories peculiar to those in that condition even the multiplication of spirits in the eternal world

Council of Fifty

11th of April 1844

Er C. P. Lott said that he had learned that inasmuch as we had a man appointed to guide us, that no undertaking seems to go right without his assistance, and they would finally have to call his assistance after all. the savoir said without me ye can do nothing. He thinks the shortest way is to have the pres come to it first as last
Er W.W. Phelps motioned that prest J. Smith be added to the Committee which was seconded by Er W. Richards
prest J. Smith arose and said that the committee were first appointed to bring forth all the intelligence they could, and when their productions were presented to him he could correct the <103> errors and fill the interstices where it was lacking. He had considered that a Theocracy consisted in our exercising all the intelligence of the council, and bringing forth all the light which dwells in the breast of every man, and then let God approve of the document & receiving the sanction of the council it becomes a law. Theocracy as he understands it is, for the people to get the viw of God and then acknowledge it, and see it executed. It is necessary for the council to exhaust their wisdom, and except they do they will never know but they are as wise as God himself, and ambitious men will, like Lucifer think they are as wise as God and will try to lift themselves up and put their feet <104> on the necks of others. There has always been some man to put himself forward and say I am the great I &c. I want the council to exert all their wisdom in this thing, and when they see that they cannot get a perfect law themselves, and I can, then, they will see from whence wisdom flows. I know I can get the veiw of God in the subject. Vox populi, Vox Dei. The voice of the people assenting to the voice of God. There never has been a man in this age who could tell the people what the true principles of liberty was. Washington did not do it I dont want to be ranked with that committe I am a committee of myself, and cannot mingle with any committe in such <105> matters. The station which I hold is an independant one and ought not to be mingled with any thing else. Let the Committee get all the droppings they can from the presence of God and bring it to me, and if it needs correction or enlargement I am ready to give it. The principles by which the world can be governed is the principle of two or three being united. Faith cannot exist without a concentration of two or three. The sun, moon and planets roll on that principle. If God the Fatheer, the Son and the Holy Ghost were to disagree, the worlds would clask together in an instant. He referred to brother Lot and his farming & said God would prosper him because he gets <106> his mind right. When I get anything from God I shall be alone. I understand the principles of liberty we want. I have had the instructions It is necessary that this council should abide by their instructions. From henceforth let it be understood that I shall not associate with any committee I want every man to get knowledge, search the laws of nations and get all the information they can. There can be no exceptions taken to any thing that any man can say in this council. I dont want any man ever to assent to anything in this council and then find fault with it. Dont decide in favor of anything untill you know it. Every man ought to study Geography <107> Government and language, so that he may be able to go forth to any nation and before any multitude with eloquence.

<115>
Thursday April 11th 1844
2 o clock P.M.
Council met pursuant to adjournment and opened by singing two Hymns
The chairman made some remarks on the absence of brother Edward Bonney the cause of absence, and his good feelings towards the council &c
He then went on to say that for the benifit of mankind and succeeding generations he wished it to be recorded that there are men admitted members of this honorable council, who are not members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, neither profess any creed or religious sentiment whatever, to show that in the organization of this <116> Kingdom men are not consulted as to their religious opinions or notions in any shape or form whatever and that we act upon the broad and liberal principal that all men have equal rights and ought to be respected, and that every man has a privilege in this organization of choosing for himself voluntarily his God, and what he pleases for his religion, inasmuch as there is no danger but that every man will embrace the greatest light. God cannot save or damn a man only on the principle that every man acts, chooses and worships for himself; hence the importance of thrusting from us every spirit of bigotry and intollerance towards <117> a mans religious sentiments, that spirit which has drenched the earth with blood- When a man feels the least temptation to such intolerance he ought to spurn it from him. It becomes our duty on account of this intollerance and corruption- the inalienable right of man being to think as he pleases- worship as he pleases &c being the first law of every thing that is sacred- to guard every ground all the days of our lives. I will appeal to every man in this council beginning at the youngest that when he arrives to the years of Hoary age he will have to say that the principles of intollerance and bigotry never had a place in this <118> Kingdom, nor in my breast, and that he is even then ready to die rather than yeild to such things. Nothing can reclaim the human mind from its ignorance, bigotry, superstition &c but those grand and sublime principles of equal rights and universal freedom to all men. We must not despise a man on account of infirmity. We ought to love a man more for is infirmity. Nothing is more congenial to my feelings and principles, than the principles of universal freedom and has been from the beginning. If I can know that a man is susceptible of good feelings & integrity and will stand by his friends, he is my friend. The only thing I am afraid of is, that I will not live long <119> enough to enjoy the society of these my friends as long as I want to. Let us from hence forth drive from us every species of intollerance. When a man is free from it he is capable of being a critic. When I have used every means in my power to exalt a mans mind, and have taught him righteous principles to no effect- he is still inclined in his darkness, yet the same principles of liberty and charity would ever be manifested by me as though he embraced it. Hence in all governments or political transactions a mans religious opinoins should be judged by the law independant of religious prejudice, hence we want in our <112> constitution those laws which would require all its officers to administer justice without any regard to his religious opinions, or thrust him from his office. There is only two or three things lacking in the constitution of the United States. If they had said all men are born equal, and not only that but they shall have their rights, they shall be free, or the armies of the government should be compelled to enforce those principles of liberty. And the President or Governor who does not do this, and who does not enforce those principles he shall lose his head. When a man is this bound by a constitution he cannot refuse to protect his subjects, he dare not do it. And when a Governor <121> or pesident will not protect his subject he ought to be put away from his office, I can cloth the old skeleton (refering to a figure used by Er Cahoun to shew his veiws of the Present constitution) although it was an old dead horses head, but it is not nesecessary for it only requires two or three sentences in a constitution to govern the world. Only clothe the officers of government with the power of free tolerance and compel them to exercise and enforce those principles and we have what we want. Give our Marshal the power of free tolerance and see if he would not exercise it. Only think! When a man can enjoy his liberties and has the power of <122> civil officers to protect him, how happy he is.”
While the president was speaking on these subjects he felt animated and used a 14 inch guage or rule pretty freely till finally he broke it in two in the middle.
Er B. Young said, that as the rule was broken in the hands of our chairman so might every tyrannical government be broken before us.
Mr Uriah Brown arose to thank the chair for the explaination given concerning himself and the two other gentlemen, who are admitted members of this council and are not members of the Church. He is not connected with any religious body. He has sought after

“We, the people of the Kingdom of God, knowing that all power emanates from God, that the earth is his possession, and he alone has the right to govern the nations and set in order the kingdoms of this world; that he only has a right to institute laws and establish decrees for the government of the human family; that he is our Father in heaven; and we, his legitimate children, inhabiting his footstool, and that no rule, law, government, dominoin or power, unless instituted by him, can be productive <146> of the greatest happiness, prosperity, exaltation and glory of his subjects:- And knowing also that none of the nations, kingdoms or governments of the earth do acknowledge the creator of the Universe as their Priest, Lawgiver, King and Sovereign, neither have they sought unto him for laws by which to govern themselves;- And knowing also, that there is not an original kingdom on the earth that holds the rightful authority from the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, to govern his subjects: but that all the nations have obtained their power, rule and authority by usurption, rebellion, bloodshed, tyranny and fraud:-
“And knowing also, <147> that no government, which has this originated, has the disposition and power to grant that protection to the persons and rights of man, viz. life, liberty, possession of property, and pursuit of happiness, which was designed by their creator to all men; but that the cruelty, oppression, bondage, slavery, rapine, bloodshed, murder, carnage, desolation, and all the evils that blast the peace, exaltation, and glory of the universe, exist in consequence of unrighteous rule, and unlawful dominoin, by which the pure, the patriotic, the noble, the virtuous, the philanthropic, the righteous and wise servants of God have <148> been persecuted, hunted, whipped, scourged, exiled, massacrued, sawn assunder, crucified and slain in all ages of the world, under all earthly authorities, and by every form of government, from the days of murderous Cain, to the days of the exterminating Boggs of Missouri. And that all the pride, corruption, impurity; intrigue, spiritual wickedness in high places, party spirit, faction, perplexity and distress of nations, are the natural results of these illigitimate governments:- And knowing that God hath created all men free and equal:- And having sought in vain among all the nations of the earth, to <149> find a government instituted by heaven; an assylum for the opprest; a protector of the innocent, and a shield for the defenceless:- an impenetrable Aegis for the honorable of all nations; uncorrupted by the usurpations of designing men, the contaminating influence of the love of Gold, and the lawless intrigues of aspiring demagogues:- unfettered by unrighteous legislation, and untrammelled by the mandates of an unjust judiciary; not degraded by a superstition or religious influence: A Realm where liberty spreads undivided and sperates unspent; and where truth and virtue are the centre and circumference <150> of the nation; are as enduring as the hilss of eternity, and as ommipotent as the voice of Jehovah:- To hasten the accomplishment of his purposes; To fulfil the predictions of the prophets to establish a pure government; to lift up an ensign to the nations, and establish a standard for all people, that the strength, and the power, and the glory, and the exaltation, and the kingdom, and the dominoin under the whole heavens, may become the kingdom of our God and of his Chirst, as has been predicted by all the holy prophets since the world began, to be brought to pass on the earth in the last days; where peace, unoin, harmony, fellowship, philanthropy, <151> benevolence, virtue, and brotherly love shall reign triumphantly together in the bosom of every subject and where the elements, the light, the air, the water and the land shall be as free as the gift of their creator; where we can rest under the shadow of his wing, and when the supreme lae of the land shall be the word of Jehovah!-
“We have supplicated the great I am, that he would make known his will unto his servants, concerning this, his last kingdom, and the law, by which his people shall be governed: And the voice of the Lord unto us was,- Verily thus saith the Lord, this is the name by <152> which you shall be called, the Kingdom of God and his Laws, with the Keys and powers thereof, and judgement in the hands of his servants, Ahman
“Christ,
“Art. 1st I am, the Lord thy God, rulling the armies of heaven above, and among the nations of the earth beneath; I have created all men of one blood; I set up one, and I put down another, and to me alone belongs the right, the power, the majesty, the glory, and the dominoin; I alone am King of Kings, and Lord of Lords; I alone am the rightful lawgiver to man; I alone have a right to judge the inhabitants of the earth, which is my footstool; <153> And I will acknowledge no other law, rule, power, Authority or dominoin, than that which is instituted by me, the great I Am,, And no other government, Kingdom, Dominoin, Authority, power, rule, or law, shall be acknowledged by my people.
‘Art. 2nd I the Lord will do nothing but what I have revealed or shall reveal unto my servants the prophets and I have appointed one man, holding the keys and authority, pertaining to my holy priesthood, to whom I will reveal my laws, my statutes, my ordinances, my Judgements, my will and pleasure concerning my Kingdom on the earth.
<154>
“Art 3rd And my Servant and Prophet whom I have called and chosen, shall have power to appoint Judges and officers in my Kingdom, And my people shall have the right to choose or refuse those officers and judges, by common consent: And the judges who shall be approved by my people shall condemn the guilty, and let the innocent go free! And shall have power to execute, and shall execute, justice and judgement in righteousness, and punish transgressors throughout all my kingdom on the earth; and if the judges or officers transgress, they shall be punished according to my laws.”

Discourse, circa 19 July 1840, as Reported by Martha Jane Knowlton Coray

A few Item from a discourse delivered by Joseph Smith July 19— 1840
Read a chap in [Ezekiel] ed concluding with this saying and when all these things come to pass and Lo they will come then shall you know that a Prophet hath been among you1
Afterwards read the parable of the 12 olive trees2 and said speaking of the Land of Zion that It consisted consists of all N. & S America but that any place where the Saints gather is Zion which every righteous man will build up for a place of safety for his children that The olive trees are 12 stakes which are yet to be built not the Temple in Jackson as some suppose3 for while the 12 olive stakes are being built we will be at [p. [9]] peace but the Nations of the Earth will be at war:
our cry from the 1st has been for peace4 and we will continue pleading like the Widow at the feet of the unjust judge5 but we may plead at the feet of Majistrates and at the feet of Judges At the feet of Governors and at the feet of senotors & at the feet of the Pre[s]idents for 8 years it will be of no avail we shall find no favor in any <of the> courts of this government6
The redemption of Zion is the redemption of all N & S America and those 12 stake must be built up before the redemption of Zion can take place and those who refuse to gather [p. [10]] and build when they are comanded to do so cease to be Saviours of men and are thenceforth good for nothing but shall be cast out and trodden underfeet of men7 for their transgression as Reed Peck was when he aplied in the name of an apostate for buisness in a store in Quincy8 They told him that they wanted no apostates round them and showed him the door At this same store the Authorities of this Churc<h> could have obtained almost any amount of Credit they could have asked—
*We shall build the Zion of the Lord in peace untill the servants of that Lord shall begin to lay the found [p. [11]][a]tion of a great and high watch Tower and then shall they begin to say within themselves what need hath my Lord of this tower seeing this is a time of peace &c—9
Then the Enemy shall come as a thief in the night and [one blank line] scatter the servants abroad10 when the seed of these 12 Olive trees are scattered abroad they will wake up the Nations of the whole Earth Eeven this Nation will be on the very verge of crumbling to peices and tumbling to the ground11 and when the constitution is upon the brink of ruin this people will be the Staff up[on] which the Nation shall [p. [12]] lean and they shall bear away the constitution away from the <very> verge of destruction—12 Then shall the Lord say Go tell all my servants who are the strength of mine house my young men and middle aged &c Come to the Land of my vineyard and fight the battle of the Lord—13 Then the Kings & Queens shall come then the rulers of the Earth shall come then shall all saints come yea the Foreign saints shall come to fight for the Land of my vineyard for in this thing Shall be their safety and they will have no power to choose but will come as a man fleeeth from a sudden des [p. [13]] destruction— But before this the time shall be when these who are now my friends shall become my enemies and shall seek to take my life and shall be m there are those now before me who will more furiously pursue me and more dilligently seek to my life and be more b[l]ood thirsty upon my track thus <than> ever were the Misourian Mobbers you say among yourselves as did them of old time is it I & is it I14 but I know these things by the visions of the Almighty—
But brethren come ye yea come all of you who can come and go to with your mights [p. [14]] and build up the cities of the Lord and whosoever will let him come and partake of the poverty of Nauvoo freely15 for those who partake of her poverty shall also shall also partake of her prosperity and it is now wisdom in God that we should enter into as compact a city as posible For Zion and Jerusalem and must both be built up before the coming of Christ This will near a half of a century How long will it take to do this 10 years yes more than 40 years will pass before this work will be accomplished and when these cities are built then shall the coming of the son of man be [p. [15]]
Now let all who can coolly and deliberately dispose of their property come up and give of their substance to the [poor?] that the hearts of the poor may be comforted and all may worship god together in holiness of heart16 come brethren come all of you— And I prophecy in the name of the Lord that the state of Illinois shall become a great mountain and mighty mountain as [a] city set upon a hill that cannot be hid and a great [candle?] that giveth light to the world17 and The city of Nauvoo als[o] shall become the Greatest city in the whole world— [p. [16]]
curse that man who says to his neighbor you are a mean man because you do not believe as I do I now invite all liberall minded men to come up to Nauvoo and help to build up the city of our God We are not greatly distressed No no nor ever will be This is the principle place of gathering therefore let the brethren begin to roll in like clouds and we will sell you lots if you are able to pay for them and of if not you shall have them without money and without price18
The greater blessing is unto those who come in times of [p. [17]] adversity. For many will come to us in times of prosperity that will stand at the corners of the streets saying with long pharisaical faces to those that come after thems dont go near Bro Joseph dont go near the authorities of the church for they will pick your pockets they will rob you of all your money19 Thus will they breed in our midst a spirit of dissatisfaction and distrust that will end in persecution and distress20——
Now from this hour bring every thing you can bring and build a Temble [Temple] unto the Lord a house into the mighty God [p. [18]] of Jacob. We will build upon the top of this Temple a great observatory a great and high watch tower and in the top thereof we will Suspend a tremendous bell that when it is rung shall rouse the inhabitants of [Fort] Madison and wake up the people of Warsaw and sound in the ears of men [in] carthage Then comes the ancient records yea all of them dig them yes bring them forth speedily
Then shall the poor be fed by the curious who shall come from all parts of the world to see this wonderful temple Yea I [p. [19]] I prophecy that pleasure parties shall come from England to see the Mamoth and like the Queen of Sheba shall say the half never was told them.21 School houses shall be built here and High schools shall be established and the great men of the [earth] shall send their sons here to board while they are receiving their education among us and even Noblemen shall crave the priviledge of educating their children with us and these poor saints shall chink in their pockets the money of these proud men received from such as come and dwell with us [p. [20]]
Now brethren I obligate myself to build as great a temple as ever solomon did22 if the church will back me up. moreover it shall not impoverish any man but enrich thousands and I prophecy that the time shall be when these saints shall ride proudly over the mountains of Missouri and no Gentile dog nor Missouri dog Shall dare lift a tongue against them but will lick up the dust from beneath their feet23 and I pray the father that many here may realize this and see it with their eyes and And if it should be [p. [21]] (Stretching his hand towards the place and in a melancholly tone that made all hearts tremble) will of God that I might live to behold that temple completed and finished from the foundation to the top stone I will say Oh Lord it is enough Lord let thy servant depart in peace which is my ernest prayer in the name of the L Jesus Amen [p. [22]]

Lord shall being to lay the foundation of a great and high watch Tower and then shall they

Last Sermons of Joseph Smith the Prophet.

By Alfred Bell
A discourse delivered by Joseph Smith to the Nauvoo Legion on the public Square in Nauvoo on the 22 of June 1844.

Brethren, we will give up our arms as the governor requires we will give to them that asketh of us & trust in the Lord for future welfare I wish to tender, <you> as soldiers and citizens under my command, as your general, you have done your duty faithfully in guarding this city and in guarding & preserving the lives of the people as well as mine in a spcial manner. for I have
seen you on duty without shoes and comfortable clothing and if I had the means to buy or could obtain those necessary things for you I would gladly do it, but I cannot mortgage any of my property to get one dollar. but I will say this you will be called the first Elders of the Church and your mission will be to the Nations of the Earth you will gather many people into the fastnesses of the Rocky Mountains as a centre for the gathering of the people and you will be faithful because you have been true and many of those who come in under your ministry, on account of their much learning (will) seek for high places. And they will be set up and raise themselves to eminence above you, but you will walk in low places unnoticed and you will know all that transpires in their minds, and those that are your friends are my friends

This I will promise you that when I come again to bad you forth, for I <will> go to prepare a place for you so that where I am you will be. I now dismiss you with my blessings to go home, Amen

The last discourse that Joseph Smith delivered in Nauvoo on the top of a frame building close to the Nauvoo House on the 24 of June 1844
Laying his hand on the head of Levi W Hancock saying This day the Lord has shown to me that which he has never shown me before, that I have thousands of friends that never pretended friendship: while others have sought to crawl into my bosom on account of my good feelings towards them, and now are vipirs, and seek my life and if they shall take it, they will persue you they will do it any how, when you are obliged to fight, be sure that you do not stain your hands in the blood of women & children, and when your enemies call for quarters be sure that you grant them the same; and then you will gain power over the world, you will be forever called the Nauvoo Legion and as I have had the honor of being your General and leader I feel to say a few word for your comfort & I wish to ascertain your interest and faith in your futur mission of life that you are engaged in, even the same cause which the power of the priesthood sealed upon you and your callings to minister life and salvation to all nations on the face of the earth, although things appear at the present time bad, the work of our enemies that they hold at the present time overwhelming over us, but I will liken these things to a wheel of fortune if we are at this time under the wheel, it is sure to be rolling on And as sure will the Saints be some time on the top of this great wheel if they hold on to the object in view Our enemies are after me to trust myself amongst them by their crouching the honor of the State by the governor & authorities of Ill. I will therefore say to you as Saints and Elders of Israel be not troubled nor give yourselves uneasiness so as to make rash moves by which you may be cut short in your preaching the gospel to this generation, for you will be called upon to go forth and call upon the free men from maine to gather themselves in the strong holds of the rocky mountains and the red men from the West and all people from the North & from the South and from the East to go to the west to establish themselves in the Strongholds of their gathering places and there you will gather the redman to their centre from their scattered & dispersed situation to become the Strong arm of Jehovah who will be a strong bulwark of protection from your foes. These things I feel to tell you before hand that you may always be ready for your duty, for at this time I need the best of friends to stand by me and on this occasion I would like to know of you all by your answering yes or no are you willing to lay down your lives for me. (Pause) when the answer was with unanimous voice “Yes” I am your father. Shall I not be your father when all with loud exclamation said yes, when again he Said then I am willing to lay down my life for you, And if innocent blood is spilt on this occasion (armming his sword out of its scabbard and raised it above his head) I will call upon the gods to bear witness of this, I will draw my sword and it shall never be sheathed again until vengeance is taken upon all your enemies and I will call upon the elements in your defense the winds with the whirlwinds & the thunders and the lightnings & the hailstorms – the heavens shall tremble and with earthquakes shall the earth be shaken And the seas heaving themselves beyond their bounds these things shall be brought to bear against your enemies for your preservation as the people of the Lord We have given up our arms and they have taken away our right of protection by our city charter and now they desire that I shall surrender myself into thier hands which I have consented to do, I only go to riturn to you again Amen
With his blessing upon us we were desmissed to Go Home

George Laub Journal accounts

Now we was taught from the mouth of the prophet from Sabeth to Sabeth who Spake with great power and much ashurance he Expounded the Scripture that it could not be missunder Stood for plainness
20
He also told us the will of the Lord concerning our present Situation and State. In this my Soul found food as a hungry mans body that Sits to the luceries of the Earth he told us how to walk before the Lord and how to lead a happy life Exorting us to obey the council to these words also to add works to our faith virtue knowledg temperence Brotherly kindness charity with all making our calling and Election Shure for if these things abound in you you will neither be barren nor unfruitfull and our Spirits nare & do bare witness of his teachings that that the are from god and the are true & the various denominations know knothing about god or Jesus Christ or of the father or of truith or of knowledge as it consists in god & But I will show the true principles of the doctrin of Jesus Christ in its purity
21
Concerning the Principles of the gospel
Now there is a true and perfect order and plan of salvation a perfect rule for the salvation of man. Now we know when there is any thing perfect there can not any thing be added or taken from lest it will render that imperfect And if our Earthly fathers tell us to do any thing if we will not obey them the will not be pleased with us and the will chastise us and if we still resist then the will cast us off and the will not give us any part or lot of their inheritance untill we are willing to obey there commands and then the will have mercy on us But if the make their will and die the leave it to some of the heirs as overseer to us and when we become obedient to the will of the one the leave it to; then we can partake of that blessing left for us if not then it is bequethed to our heirs and so on and our state hass become miserable. Now Jesus Christ hass laid a plan of salvation that
22
by our obedience to the commands of the father we may be saved & save those also who was disobedient afore times that the might live according to god in the spirit for what men do for them in the flesh Now the ordinance of Jesus was to come to the knowledge of the truth that we was alience from the truth and that we had to repent from our alience and forsake them and obey his commands that we might be grafted in by baptism and have hands laid on for the reception of the holy ghost and that will lead us to do the will of the father By the obediance of all the commands then we are true Sons of god heirs and Joint heirs of Jesus Christ our Elder brother for the seal will be placed upon our heads by the saints of god or by The Servants of god in obedience when Jesus was upon the Earth
23
there was a sertain one standing at the door and told Jesus that his mother was at the door he thn answered & asked who is my mother and he looked upon his disciples and said he that doeth the will of my father in heaven the same is my mother & my brother & my sister
April the .6.1843 By Joseph Smith
Now concerning Spirits First of all or in the begining the great Eloheam in the hebrew meaning the god of all gods called a <grand> council & and the councild together to form this planet on which we are now, or do dwell at present they Spake and Earth from cayus Sprang by their workmanship cayus being <matur> mater Element the Saw till time Should be nomore and the spake concerning <the> Redemption of this world and formed Limited Sircumstances concerning the redemption Jesus Christ being the greater light or of more Inteligence for he loved rituousness and hated inequity
Continued 24
He being the elder Brother Presented himself for to come and redeem this world as it was his right by inheritance he stated he could save all those who did not sin against the holy ghost & the would obey the code of laws that was given But their Sircustances ware that all who would sin against the Holy ghost Should have noe forgivness neither in this world nor in the world to come. for they had Strove aganst light and knowledg after the had tasted of the good things of the world to come the should not have any power in the world to come because the had a knowledg of the world to come. and ware not willing to abide the law therefore the cam have noe forgivness there but must be most miserable of all and never can be renewed again
Refered to 6 chapter of Hebrews
But Satan or lucifer being the next heir and had alotet to him great power and authority Even prince of the Eir
25
He spake Emediatly and boasted of himself Saying send me I can save all Even those who Sined against the holy ghost and he accused his brethren and was herld from the council for Striving to breake the law Emediatly and there was a warfare with Satan and the gods and the hurld Satan out of his place and all them that would not keep the law of the councill But he himself being one of the council would not keep his or their first Estat for he was one of the Sons of perdition and concequently all the Sons of perdition became devils &c.
How came Spirits why the are and ware Self Existing as all Eternity & our Spirits are as Eternal as the very god is himself & that we choose to come on this Earth to take unto ourselvs tabernackles by permition of our father that we might be Exalted Equil with god himself & therefore Jesus Spake in this wise. I do as my
26
Father before me did well what did the father doo why he went & took a body and went to redeem a world in the flesh & had power to lay down his life and to take it up again & this is the way we become heirs of gods & joint heirs of <with> Jesus &c. But those who die without the obediance of the gospel while having a privlege here will have to Subject to the law the are under but those who have not had this privilege will have it in the prison of Spirits. for so long as the have not the priviledg the cannot be condemned therefore the must come under condemnation by this wise & for the will be as the ware in torment of fire & brimstone untill the fullness of times for the know not what will be their doom and as there are many mantions or Departments in my fathers kingdom Suitable for Every ones condition Jesus Said he would goe to prepare a place
27
That where I am ye may also come for we are to goe from glory to glory & as one is raised the Next may be raised to his place or Sphere and So thake their Exaltation through a regular channel. & when we get to where Jesus is he will be as far ahed of us in Exaltation as when we Started
Thus as one Star differs from another So does one glory differ from another and our bodies are in like fashon as god or Jesus likewise &
But Says the English translation god created all things out of nothing but there was never yet anything made of nothing. Shame to Such logick. the words in the hebrew is this when the gods counsiled together the the went to work and roled this Earth in Existence this the theme of the begining the word hell Signifies prison of Spirits this is the Signification of hell
28
There torment will be as with fire and Brimstone & all those that are not adopted into the kingdom by baptism. are in Some degree punished according to their works. for their consience are gnawing them because the know not what will become of them till Some one in the flesh Proxumates for them and pays the utmost farthing for them. that the may live in the Spirit acording to what men do for them in the flesh or Else why are we baptized for the dead if the dead rise not at all for if we are planted together in the likeness of his death and buerial then Shall we rise again in the likeness of his resurection & Burried in Baptism in baptism out under the watter in the liquid grave and thus do we become Saviours on mount Zion —memery by George Laub

Joseph Smith
Nauvoo April 13th 1843
Concerning gods Witness 24th chapter of [crossed out: Revelations of John] <Mathew> <Mathew> <14> verses & the original translation Reads thus and I will Send you a nother witness & he Shall preach this gospel to all nations to the Ends of the world But woe to that man or woman who Shall lift up there or his hands against gods witness for the are rasing their hands or arms against the power of god and the will be cursed. But in these times in the last days there will many fals prophets arise and false teachers and decieve many the Shall have many followers by their deceit. the Strive to have power and by their pernitious ways lead of many- for Brother Joseph Smith was chosen for the last dispensation or Seventh Dispensation the time the grand council Set in heaven to organise
30
this world Joseph was chosen for the last & greatest Prophet to lay the foundation of gods work of the Seventh Dispensation therefore the Jews asked John the Baptist if he was Elias or Jesus or that great prophet that was to come the Devil lusifer also organised his kingdom in oposition to overthrow gods kingdom & he became the Son of perdition also concerning the Kingdoms in my fathers house or kingdom are many kingdoms or worlds I will goe to prepare a place for you. and according to your works you Shall be rewareded. these who will not obey the gospel will goe to the world of spirits there to Stay till the have paid the utmost farthing or till some person pays their debts the owe. Now all those die in the faith goe to the prison of Spirits to preach
31
to the ded in body but the are alive in the Spirit & those Spirits preach to the Spirits that they may live according to gods in the Spirit and men do minister for them in the flesh and angels bare the glad tidings to the spirits & the are made happy by these means therefore those who are baptised for their dead are the Saviors on mount Zion & the must receave their washings and their anointings for their dead the Same as for themselvs till the are connected to the ones in the despensation before is and trace their leniage to cconnect the priesthood again——
and if any other man preach any other gospel then this and the Baptism for the remision of sins and the laying on of hands for the reception of the holy ghost let him be anathamised or acursed the curs of god Shall be upon him or them
32
Concerning Resurection
a flesh and Blood cannot inherit the kingdom of god or the kingdom that god inherits or inhabits But the flesh without the blood and the Spirit of god flowing in the vains in Sted of the blood for blood is the part of the body that causes corruption. therefore we must be changed in the twinkle of an Eye or have to lay down these tabernacles and leave the blood vanish away therefore Jesus christ left his blood to atone for the Sins of the world that he might assend into the presents of the father for god dwels in flaming flames and he is a consuming fire he will consume all that is unclean and unholly and we could not abide his presants unless pure spirits in us. for the Blood is the corruptible part of the tabernacles
for the resurection is devised to take away coruption and make
33
Man perfect or in the glory which he was created for the body is Sowen in corruption & raised in incorruption then we will be able to goe in the presents of god
Br Joseph Smith was Sent to remind the world of Sin of riteousness & of the Judgments to come
But this is that of what John Says in his 14th chapter but he Says of Sin of ritiousness and of a Judgment to come to reprove the world this is rong translation for to remind is correct
concerning those who here the gospel
now concerning those who know the gospel & do not obey But fight against it will be Shut up in prison condemnation and shall not be visited. till many days hence Isayah 24 chapter- then by making a forfit of some payment for them &—

us there is only one god the father of whome are all things and we in him and our lord Jesus christ by whom are all things and we by him See Joel 2 ch 32 vers & it Shall come to pass that in mount Zion there Shall be Deliverence or Redemption for your dead & in Jerusalem and those that <will> not be redeemd or do not be redeemd. the Antions Shall come & redeem them in their glory them Saviours or in other words gods will come on mount Zion &&

the Scripture say I and my father are one & again that the father Son & holy ghost are one 1 John 5ch 7vers But these three
40
But these three agree in the same thing S did the Saviour pray to the father. I pray not for the world but those home he gave me out of the world that we might be one or to Say be of one mind in the unity of the faith.
but Every one being a diffrent or Seperate person & So is god & is god & Jesus christ & the holy ghost. Seperate persons. but the all agree in one or the Self Same thing But the holy ghost is yet a Spiritual body and waiting to take to himself a body- as the Saviour did or as god did or the gods before them took bodies for the Saviour says the work that my father did do I also & those are the works he took himsef a a body & then laid down
41
his life that he might take it up again & the Scripture say those who will obey the commandments Shall be heirs of god & Joint heirs <with> of Jesus Christ we then also took bodys to lay them down to take them up again & the spirit itself bears witness with our spirits that we are the children of god & if children then heirs and Joint heirs with Jesus christ if so be that we Suffer with him in the flesh that we may be also glorified to gether. See Romans 8 ch 16 & 17 vers

Br Hurum Smith April 27th 1843 Concerning the “plurality of gods & worlds”
Now I say unto you that there are lords many & gods many
42
But to us there is but one god the father & Jesus christ the first begotten who is made Equil with god So that he himself is a god and now the work that the father done did he doo also & So there is a whole trane & leniage of gods & this world was created by faith & works. the same as if a man would build a house. he knows where the materials are & believs he could do the work of that building for he understood the Sience of building & by faith he gained the work with his own hands and compleated that Building the Same way was this world, by faith & works & by understanding the principle it was made by the hands of god or gods it was made
43
it was made of Element or in other words of cayus it was in cayotick form from all Eternity & again the held counsil together that the might Rool this world into form as all others are made SHowing you by the building of a house as a Sample or a figure in my fathers house are many namtions or in my fathers world are many worlds I will goe & prepar a place for you & then if there are many worlds then there must be many gods then there must be many gods for Every Star that we See is a world and is inhabited the Sane as this world is peopled. the Sun & moon is Enhabited
44
& the Stars & (Jesus Christ is the light of the Sun&) the Stars are inhabited the Same as this Earth. but Eny of them are larger then this Earth & meny that we cannot see without a tellis Scope are larger then this Earth the are under the Same order as this Earth is under going & undergoing the Same changed there was & is a first man Adam and also a Saviour in the Meredian of times the Same computing times and all things in order many thing are to be considered, that will bring knowledg to our understanding but the foolish understand not these things for this world was paternd after the former world or after Mansions above

——
Upon one of my calls at his house on business, I found him walking the floor, chafing, I thought vexed. He was talking to someone in the next room and he was very earnest. He stopped in his walk and turning to me said, “Brother Mace, this gospel gathers up some of the meanest of all God’s creation.” After a short pause he said, “Yes, and some of the finest fellows that ever lived.” (Wandle Mace, Autobiography)
